October 2026 gives you two good dark weeks and then takes the evening away. The new moon falls on 10 October at 15:51 UTC, and the Draconid meteor shower peaks on the evening of 8 October with almost no moon in the way. Then clocks go back across Europe on 25 October and sunset in London jumps from 17:48 to 16:46 overnight. Put night work in the first fortnight and city work in the last week. Every time below was computed for this issue and checked against the US Naval Observatory.
Most monthly guides list events. The useful observation about this October is structural: the dark-sky and the good-light opportunities do not overlap, so do not build one trip around both.

Almost every meteor shower asks you to get up at three in the morning. The Draconids do not, which makes them the most travel-friendly astronomy event of the autumn. A shower's radiant is the point the meteors appear to stream away from, and the higher it sits the more you see. The Draconid radiant is in the head of Draco, highest at nightfall and sinking all night: the reverse of the usual pattern.
I computed the radiant's altitude at the moment full darkness arrives on 8 October, and again six hours later, so you can see how sharply the window closes.

Sixty degrees is two thirds of the way from the horizon to straight overhead, and you get it the moment it goes dark. By the small hours the radiant has dropped to between 14 and 27 degrees and the show is largely over.
One wrinkle decides which side of the Atlantic gets the better night. The predicted maximum is around 01:00 UTC on 9 October. In the north-eastern United States that is 21:00 on the evening of the 8th, in full darkness, radiant still 51 degrees up: close to ideal. In Britain the same instant is 02:00, by which point the radiant has fallen to 23 degrees. So watch the early evening from Britain and accept you are catching the approach rather than the peak. In Japan the maximum falls mid-morning, so there is nothing to see.
Be honest about the rate, though. No outburst is forecast for 2026, so expect something like five meteors an hour. This is a shower you watch on a rug with a flask, not one you drive four hours for. Its value is that the effort is nearly zero. For a photograph, put a wide lens on a tripod pointing north-east and run 15 to 25 second exposures back to back for an hour.
If you only have your phone: use night mode, prop the phone against something solid rather than holding it, and frame a tree or roofline along the bottom edge. A meteor with no foreground is just a scratch on a black rectangle.
The Orionids peak around 21 October, come from the debris of Halley's Comet, and are quoted at up to 20 meteors an hour. That is a zenithal hourly rate: what a perfect observer would see under a perfect sky with the radiant overhead. Nobody has ever had that. Expect roughly half under a dark sky, a quarter or less from a lit suburb.
Two things make 2026 worse than usual. The moon is about 80% lit on the peak night. And the radiant is not even up when darkness falls: at the end of astronomical twilight on 21 October it sits 15 degrees below the horizon in London and 24 degrees below in New York, reaching a useful 35 degrees only some six hours later. That puts you outside at two in the morning, fighting moonlight. If you have one clear night this October, spend it on the 8th.
The new moon on 10 October is the anchor: for three or four nights either side the moon is absent or a thin crescent that sets early. Here is how much genuine astronomical darkness you get on the night of 9 to 10 October. Astronomical darkness means the sun is more than 18 degrees below the horizon, the point at which the sky stops contributing light of its own.

Notice the direction of that list. The further north you go, the less darkness you get in early October, which is the opposite of what most people assume. High latitudes win in midwinter and lose in early autumn: the Dolomites give you more usable darkness this month than Iceland does. September's issue worked through why the Milky Way core and aurora season do not overlap by latitude. By October the core sets in evening twilight from mid-northern latitudes, so treat it as gone for the year.
The happy accident of the month: peak colour in the Vermont and New Hampshire high country falls in almost the same window as the dark skies. Forecast best colour is 2 to 10 October for Stowe, Smugglers' Notch and Route 100 and 3 to 11 October for the White Mountains; by the week of 13 October Vermont is generally past peak, though colour runs later downhill and south. Forecasters expect a typical to slightly late season in 2026.
Practically: fly into Boston or New York, drive north, shoot ridgelines and still ponds at first light when the wind is down, and keep the evening of the 8th free. Colour by day and meteors by night in one trip is a rare combination.
The larch is a conifer that behaves like a broadleaf: its needles turn yellow and drop. Whole mountainsides in the Dolomites go gold for roughly three weeks, usually mid-October to early November, with 18 to 31 October the safest bet. It is a later, quieter alternative to New England, and it sets the colour against pale grey rock rather than against more colour.
One technique note matters more here than almost anywhere: shoot larches backlit. With the sun behind them the needles glow; with the sun behind you they go a flat brownish orange and the picture dies. That means shooting into the low sun, which at Cortina in late October means around 07:00 or 17:00 local. Our golden hour guide covers exposing for it without blowing the sky.
Plenty of itineraries sell October as autumn-leaf season in Japan. For the places most people go, it is not. The 2026 forecast puts Kyoto's peak around 5 December, with 20 November to 7 December the safe window for Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. October colour in Japan is a Hokkaido and high-altitude story, with Sapporo forecast to peak around 28 October. If the leaves are the reason for the trip, book late November. If you are in Kyoto in October anyway, go for the temples and the absence of November crowds.
This is not folklore. Geomagnetic activity is measurably higher around the equinoxes for a geometric reason: the tilt of the Earth relative to the Sun's magnetic field makes it likelier that the solar wind's field points southward, the condition that lets energy into our magnetosphere. It is the Russell-McPherron effect, identified in 1973, and it is why March and October top the long-run averages rather than midwinter.
Two caveats. A statistical tilt is not a forecast; it changes your odds over a fortnight, not your Tuesday. And 2026 is past solar maximum: cycle 25 peaked in October 2024 and is in its declining phase, so ignore marketing still selling 2026 as a peak year.
The October trade-off is darkness against latitude. Iceland and northern Norway have the geography but only 7 to 8 hours of true darkness early in the month. The Scottish Highlands get nearly nine, are reached by the aurora in a decent storm, and cost far less than in February. Aurora forecasting is genuinely short-range, 30 to 90 minutes, for reasons set out in our piece on which photography apps still work with no signal. Book the week, not the night.
British Summer Time ends at 02:00 on Sunday 25 October, and the rest of the EU changes the same morning. For a photographer that is a gift: golden hour stops being an after-work problem and lands in the middle of the afternoon.

Golden hour here means the sun between six degrees above the horizon and the horizon itself: the conventional definition, and roughly the window in which light is warm and directional rather than harsh. If you are on a city break in London across that weekend, your best light on the Saturday is at a quarter past five and on the Sunday at a quarter past four. A lot of people lose a day to that.
The second trap is transatlantic. Europe changes on 25 October and the United States on 1 November, so for that one week London is four hours ahead of New York, not five. Check actual local times that week rather than adding the offset you are used to.
Here is the number that surprised me most this month. At Tromsø, at nearly 70 degrees north, the sun barely climbs at all by the end of October.

Read the last two rows again. Golden hour is the sun below six degrees. On 1 November the sun at Tromsø never gets above 5.9 degrees, so the entire day is golden hour, sunrise to sunset. That is arithmetic, not a metaphor. Tromsø also loses 4 hours 25 minutes of daylight during October alone.
It also settles a myth I once half-believed. Autumn golden hours are not universally longer: in London the evening golden hour is 44 minutes on 1 October and 49 on the 31st, against 54 at the June solstice. The lengthening is a high-latitude effect. On 31 October it runs 39 minutes in New York, 49 in London, 60 at Inverness, 84 in Reykjavík and 171 at Tromsø.
The full moon falls at 04:12 UTC on 26 October, the first after the Harvest Moon. Several outlets are calling it a supermoon. I computed the distances and it does not qualify.

Perigee, the nearest point in the moon's orbit that month, falls on 28 October at about 364,400 km, so the full moon is two days early and some 4,500 km short of it. The genuinely close full moons of this cycle are the three that follow. In any case the difference is imperceptible: a few per cent of apparent diameter is not something you notice without two frames side by side at the same focal length. Shoot the Hunter's Moon because a full moon rising near sunset over a landscape is a good picture, not because a label got attached to it.
Worth stating plainly, since monthly guides are written almost entirely from the north. In Cape Town October is spring: wildflower season tailing off, the south-easter picking up, days lengthening. In Patagonia it is early season, with long days returning, snow still on the peaks and far fewer people than the December crush. Both invert the northern problem: more light, not less, at shoulder-season prices.
Three rules. Put anything needing a dark sky between 6 and 14 October, with the 8th the pick of them. Put anything needing low, warm light in the last week. Do not plan a foliage trip to Kyoto.

Sun times and altitudes were computed with the NOAA solar equations, moon phases and distances with Meeus's lunar algorithms, then checked against the US Naval Observatory. For London on 1 October the USNO gives sunrise 06:01 and sunset 17:38 UTC against my 06:01:03 and 17:38:22, and a new moon of 10 October 15:50 UTC against my 15:51. Two other popular websites disagreed with both by two to three minutes, so these tables are not all equal. Treat everything here as good to about a minute, and remember a city is not a point: your exact spot, and any hill on your horizon, shifts sunset by more than the arithmetic does.
The evening of 8 October. The Draconid shower peaks then with almost no moonlight, and its radiant is highest at nightfall rather than before dawn, so you can watch from about 20:00 local without setting an alarm. Expect a modest rate of roughly five meteors an hour, as no outburst is forecast for 2026. The better-known Orionids on 21 October are hampered by an 80% lit moon and a radiant that stays below the horizon until late.

It is the right fortnight for meteors, constellations, aurora and any long exposure that needs a genuinely dark sky.
Clocks go back one hour across the UK and the European Union at 02:00 on Sunday 25 October 2026. The United States changes a week later, on 1 November. For that week the time difference between London and New York is four hours rather than the usual five, which catches out anyone booking connections or calls across the gap.
About an hour, overnight. In London sunset falls at 17:48 BST on Saturday 24 October and 16:46 GMT on Sunday 25 October. Evening golden hour moves with it, running from about 15:58 to 16:46 on the Sunday. In practice that means your best light on a late-October city break lands in mid-afternoon rather than after the working day.
No, not on the usual threshold. The full moon of 26 October 2026 is about 368,900 km away, while its nearest point in orbit that month falls two days later on 28 October at roughly 364,400 km. The genuinely close full moons of this cycle are those of 24 November, 24 December and 22 January, at about 360,800, 356,700 and 357,600 km. The difference is in any case too small to notice by eye.

On the night of 9 to 10 October, astronomical darkness lasts about 9.7 hours at Teide on Tenerife, 9.4 in the Dolomites, 9.2 in London, 8.9 at Inverness, 8.2 in Reykjavik and only 7.2 at Tromso. High latitudes win on darkness in midwinter, not in early autumn, so choose southern sites if raw dark hours matter more than aurora latitude.
