Photographing Oktoberfest 2026: Sunsets, Towers and the Full Moon Over Munich

Oktoberfest 2026 runs from Saturday 19 September to Sunday 4 October on Munich's Theresienwiese, the 191st edition. The photographs worth making are rarely inside a tent. They are from above, at the two ends of the day, and they depend on timings that shift fast: sunset falls from 19:18 on opening day to 18:47 on the last. Below: computed sun and moon times for the whole festival, the viewpoints and the evenings they peak, what camera kit gets through security, and one alignment worth planning around. On 21 and 22 September, seen from the tower of Alter Peter, the sun sets directly onto the 97-metre tower of St Paul's Church, on the edge of the fairground.

Oktoberfest 2026 at a glance: the five things that decide your photos

• Sunset alignment, 21–22 September: from Alter Peter's viewing platform, the sun drops onto St Paul's tower just after 19:00. Last entry to the tower is 19:00, so be inside by 18:45.
• Full moon, Saturday 26 September: it rises at 18:43, 21 minutes before sunset, almost due east across the fairground.
• Bags are capped at 3 litres (20 × 15 × 10 cm). A phone and a small camera get in. A camera backpack goes to the €5 left-luggage desk.
• No drones anywhere over the Theresienwiese during the festival.
• The Olympiaturm is closed. Plenty of guides still list it; it has been shut for renovation since June 2024.

Sunset, golden hour and blue hour in Munich during Oktoberfest 2026

All times below are Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) for the Theresienwiese, computed from solar position and checked against the US Naval Observatory, which matched to the minute on every date tested. Golden hour here means the sun below 6° of altitude; blue hour means the sun between 4° and 6° below the horizon, the short window when the sky turns deep blue and balances with artificial light. Two things follow. Blue hour lasts about 12 minutes. It is late September, when twilight is at its shortest of the year (we explained why in last week's equinox photography issue), so arrive with your framing already chosen. Morning golden hour ends between 07:37 and 07:59, and the rides do not open until 09:00 at weekends and 10:00 on weekdays. Mornings are for the rest of the city. Evenings are for the fairground.

The best sunset view of Oktoberfest: Alter Peter, 21 and 22 September

Alter Peter is the tower of St Peter's Church beside Marienplatz: 306 steps to a platform 56 metres up, open daily 09:00–19:30 from April to October, last entry 19:00, €5 for adults, according to the parish's own tower page. From there, St Paul's Church, the neo-Gothic church on the northern edge of the Theresienwiese, sits almost exactly due west. Using OpenStreetMap's building data I put its 97-metre crossing tower 1.72 km away at a bearing of 269.5°, with the tip of the spire about 1.4° above your eye line.

During Oktoberfest the sunset point swings south by roughly 0.6° a day, and it crosses that bearing in the week the festival opens:

• Sat 19 and Sun 20 September: the sun sets to the right (north) of St Paul's.
• Mon 21 September: the centre of the sun passes the spire tip at about 19:02.
• Tue 22 September: the sun slides down the spire and tower between about 19:01 and 19:05, a few minutes before it reaches the horizon.
• From 23 September: it sets progressively further left, towards the fairground.

How sure is that? I checked the solar position against the US Naval Observatory's celestial navigation data: for 21 September at 19:02:25 it gives an azimuth of 269.538° against my 269.541°. The bigger uncertainty is the terrain. The tower's position comes from map data and the heights from a terrain model, and each could move the answer by a few tenths of a degree, which is less than one day's drift. If you can only go once, go on the 22nd. The 20th and 23rd are near misses and still worth the climb.

Do this: join the queue by 18:30, because last entry is 19:00 and the platform is narrow. Stand on the west side, zoom in and let the church tower fill a third of the frame. If you only have your phone: use the longest zoom your phone has. Tap on the sky next to the sun, then drag the exposure slider down until the sun's edge stops blowing out. The tower will go almost black, which is what you want. Don't stare through an optical viewfinder at the low sun.

Can you climb St Paul's Church tower during Oktoberfest?

Usually, yes. The city's page on St Paul's says the tower is "exceptionally open" during the Wiesn. It is donation-based and staffed by volunteers, and its hours have varied from year to year: the Abendzeitung reported daily opening from 09:00 to 21:00 in 2022. I could not find published hours for 2026, so check the notice at the church door rather than building an evening around it. From the platform the fairground is below you to the south-west, with the Bavaria statue about 770 metres away. The sun sets well to the right of the statue, which side-lights the tent roofs rather than backlighting them. If the tower is open until 21:00, stay for blue hour, when the rides and tents are lit and the sky still has colour.

Full moon over Oktoberfest: Saturday 26 September 2026

The full moon falls at 18:49 CEST on 26 September, the middle Saturday of the festival. Because it is the full moon nearest the equinox (the Harvest Moon), it rises only 15–20 minutes later each evening instead of the average 50, so four evenings in a row put a nearly full moon low in the east at dusk. Times are from the US Naval Observatory for the Theresienwiese; azimuths are where the moon comes up, measured clockwise from north, so 90° is due east.

Moonrise times assume a flat horizon. Over Munich's rooftops, add 10–15 minutes: the moon climbs about a degree every six minutes here. Which evening you pick depends on the picture you want:

• Friday 25th puts the moon above the rooftops while the fairground is still in warm, direct light, the easiest exposure of the four.
• Saturday 26th is the true full moon, clearing the roofs right around sunset, but it is a Saturday, so expect the heaviest crowds.
• Sunday 27th gives you the moon in blue hour with the rides lit, and the most atmospheric frame.
• Monday 28th is the curiosity. The moon comes up at an azimuth of about 65°, and from the Bavaria statue the Frauenkirche's twin towers lie at 66°. By the time the moon clears the roofs it will have drifted a couple of degrees right of them, so moving a little north along the slope above the fairground closes the gap. Check the line with a planning app on the night. Treat it as a near miss worth trying, not a promise.

Where to stand: the Bavaria statue stands on the western edge of the fairground, looking out over it, so everything east is laid out in front of you. The Bavarian Palace Administration keeps the statue's interior open until 20:00 during Oktoberfest, €5, with a steep spiral staircase up to a viewing platform in the head that seats six. The Hall of Fame behind it is closed during the festival. The terrace below the statue is the wider, easier option for a moonrise.

What camera can you bring to Oktoberfest? The 3-litre rule

This is the rule that catches photographers out. The official security rules allow a bag of up to 3 litres, or no bigger than 20 × 15 × 10 cm. Anything larger goes to left luggage at the P1, P5, P8 or P10 entrances for €5. A typical camera backpack will not pass. Two other rules matter. The city's Oktoberfest press office states plainly that drone photography is not permitted and drones may not fly anywhere over the Theresienwiese during the fair. Its media guidance says permit-free shooting assumes small kit under 3 litres and no extra supports or rigs. That is written for press, but a tripod is exactly the thing that starts a conversation with security.

Do this: take a phone plus, at most, a small camera with a compact prime lens in a bag that fits the limit. If you only have your phone: you are not at a disadvantage here. The crowds, the low light and the need to move fast all favour it. Beer tents are packed, so ask before pointing a lens at someone's table.

How to photograph the rides at night on a phone

Ride lights look their best in the 12-minute blue-hour window from the sunset table, while the sky still holds colour. Three techniques work handheld:

• Light trails without a tripod: shoot a Live Photo of a spinning ride, open it in Photos and choose the Long Exposure effect. The phone blends the frames into a smooth trail. Brace against a railing so the static parts stay sharp.
• Night mode: iPhone switches it on automatically in low light and shows a duration in seconds. Hold still for the full count, and lean on something if you can.
• Tall rides: one of this year's three new rides, the Chaos Pendel, swings riders up to 42 metres. Get well back and shoot it against the blue sky, not the tents, so its lights don't disappear into the clutter.

Crowds matter as much as light. The city's own 2026 visitor campaign steers people towards weekdays, and pushchairs are banned on Saturdays and on 3 October. In 2026, German Unity Day on 3 October falls on the final Saturday, so expect it to be the busiest evening of the run. For a quieter blue hour, a Tuesday or Wednesday is the safer bet.

The opening parades: 19 and 20 September

Opening weekend has two morning parades. On Saturday 19 September the Einzug der Wiesnwirte (the procession of festival hosts and brewery drays) sets off at 10:35 from Sonnenstraße near Josephspitalstraße and reaches the fairground around 12:00, when the mayor taps the first keg. On Sunday 20 September the Costume and Marksmen's Parade runs from 10:00 until about noon: 8,267 participants over a 7 km route from the Max II monument on Maximilianstraße to Esperantoplatz. Viewing from the roadside is free, and grandstand seats cost €40.

At 10:00 on the 20th the sun is 28° up in the south-east, rising to 36° by 11:00. That is high enough to reach the street on wide sections like Odeonsplatz but not the shaded side of narrow streets. Do this: pick a wide open stretch, stand with the sun behind you, and shoot from a step or a raised kerb so the heads of the crowd drop out of the frame.

Beyond the fairground: Munich shots worth the detour

The Eisbach wave is back. Munich's standing river wave vanished after a riverbed clean-up in October 2025 and was officially reopened in May 2026, with surfing banned from 22:00 to 05:30 and limited to experienced surfers. Shoot from the bridge by the Haus der Kunst at a fast shutter speed (1/1000 s freezes the spray), or in burst mode on a phone.

The Olympiaturm is not an option this year. The tower has been closed since June 2024 for a renovation that replaces its lifts and fire protection. The city's English tourism page still describes a two-year closure, but the operator SWM said in April 2026 that the tower will reopen in 2027 (SWM, in German). Use Alter Peter instead. On a clear, dry day the Alps show up on the southern horizon, and a long lens pulls them in behind the city roofs.
