Where to Shoot in September 2026: Aurora Season Opens as Milky Way Season Closes

September 2026 hands the night sky over from one season to another, and the handover happens by latitude rather than by date. Dark hours are returning to the far north, which opens aurora season. At the same time the bright centre of the Milky Way is sliding below the horizon for everyone in northern Europe. The two things do not overlap, and most "best of both worlds" advice about September is wrong for exactly that reason. Before any of that, on 28 August, there is a deep partial lunar eclipse that is the best lunar eclipse anywhere on Earth until New Year's Eve 2028. Here is where to be, with the arithmetic behind each call.

28 August: a 93% lunar eclipse, and in Britain it sets while you watch

This is the last thing worth planning in August, and it is close. The Moon passes almost entirely through Earth's dark inner shadow, the umbra. At greatest eclipse 93% of the Moon's diameter is inside it, which is 7% short of a total eclipse. You will see 96% quoted in places. That is a different measurement of the same event, and the figure published in the eclipse catalogues is an umbral magnitude of 0.932, so 93% is the one to trust.

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse needs no filter, no special glasses and no permission. If the Moon is above your horizon, you can look at it and photograph it.

Where you stand changes the picture completely. From New York the eclipsed Moon sits 39 degrees up around local midnight, high and dark and easy. From London it is a very different event: at greatest eclipse the Moon is only 8.7 degrees above the horizon in the west-south-west, and it sets at 06:17 BST, before the partial phase has finished. Scotland is much the same, and worth combining with the low horizons in the Scottish Highlands rather than fighting rooftops in a city.

So for British and Irish readers this is not a telephoto-and-tripod exercise. It is a landscape shot of a red Moon low over something, and it needs a clear western horizon far more than it needs focal length. That is the same conclusion we reached about the solar eclipse a fortnight ago in the guide to photographing the 12 August eclipse, and for the same reason: from these latitudes, the interesting eclipses of 2026 both happen close to the ground.

One genuinely rare detail. In London the Sun rises at 06:07 BST and the Moon does not set until 06:17. For roughly ten minutes the eclipsed Moon and the risen Sun are both above the horizon at once, a lining-up called a selenelion, made possible only because the atmosphere bends the light of both. Inverness gets about twelve minutes, Reykjavik about nineteen. The Moon will be at barely 1.4 degrees, so this needs a sea horizon or a hilltop and clean air, and it will look faint. It is a long shot rather than a plan, but it costs nothing to be somewhere it could happen.

Do this: face west-south-west. Expose for the Moon, not the sky, then let the landscape go dark. On a phone, do not use night mode on the Moon itself, because it will smear during the long exposure. Instead shoot the Moon small inside a wider scene and let it be a red dot in a composition rather than the whole subject.

The one number that decides your September night sky: 61 minus your latitude

Here is the piece of arithmetic worth memorising. The bright centre of the Milky Way, the part everyone actually wants to photograph, sits at a declination of about 29 degrees south. That means the highest it can ever climb from where you are standing is:

61 degrees minus your latitude.

Not on a good night. Not with better planning. Ever. It is fixed by geometry, and it is the single most useful thing you can know before booking a dark-sky trip.

Read that table again, because it contains a fact that a lot of travel writing gets wrong: the galactic core never rises at all from Iceland or northern Norway. Not in September, not in June, not on the clearest night of the decade. Those wide starry shots you have seen over Icelandic waterfalls are the outer parts of the Milky Way, which are real and worth shooting, but they are not the dense, dusty, orange core.

Now add the second half of the problem. At high latitudes it does not get properly dark until late in the evening, and by then the core has already set anyway. On the night of 10 to 11 September, the sky at Reykjavik reaches full astronomical darkness at 23:35, and at that moment the core is nearly 13 degrees below the horizon. In the Scottish Highlands darkness arrives at 22:15 and the core has just slipped under. From London it clings on at about 5 degrees, low enough that you are shooting through the murkiest, most light-polluted part of the sky.

Which is why the honest answer to "can I get the aurora and the Milky Way on the same September trip?" is no, not from one place. Go north for the aurora. Go south for the core. Pick one.

The dark is coming back north, and that starts aurora season

The northern lights are not seasonal. The Sun does not know it is September. What is seasonal is darkness, and above the Arctic Circle summer nights are simply too bright to see anything, however strong the display. September is when that changes, and it changes on a schedule you can plan around.

The line that matters: Tromso gets no astronomical darkness at all until 16 September. If you book a northern-lights week in Tromso for the first half of the month you are paying aurora prices for twilight. The back half of September is a different trip entirely. Iceland opens earlier, on 3 September, which makes it the better choice if your dates are fixed early. And the Scottish Highlands have had proper darkness since mid-August, which is a reasonable argument for a cheap domestic attempt before committing to a flight.

Then there is the equinox on 23 September. Around the equinoxes the Sun's magnetic field lines up with Earth's in a way that lets the solar wind couple more efficiently, an effect named after the researchers Russell and McPherron. Averaged over decades of records, geomagnetic activity around the equinoxes runs roughly double what it does around the solstices for the same solar wind. It is a real statistical effect, and the weeks either side of 23 September are a genuinely better bet than November for the same money.

An honest correction, though. A great deal of aurora marketing still says we are at solar maximum. We are not. Solar Cycle 25 peaked in October 2024, and 2026 sits in the declining phase, with sunspot numbers falling and the first spotless days of the cycle already recorded this year. Declining-phase years still produce serious storms, sometimes very good ones, but if a tour operator is selling you 2026 as "peak solar maximum", they are working from a two-year-old briefing.

Do this: aurora shots are usually 2 to 8 seconds at f/2.8 and ISO 1600 to 3200, focused manually on a bright star. Modern phones handle this better than people expect if you can brace them, but they need something solid, so a small tripod matters more than a new phone.

Where the Milky Way still works in September

The new moon falls on 11 September (late on the 10th if you are in the Americas), and the darkest window runs roughly 8 to 14 September. That is the last genuinely good core window of 2026 for the northern hemisphere. After it, the core sets earlier every night until it is gone by late October.

Use the 61-minus-latitude rule to choose. Below about 40 degrees north the core still stands more than 20 degrees up in full darkness, high enough to clear haze and low-level light pollution. The Grand Canyon gets it to 25 degrees and has the dark skies to match. Athens is bright, but the surrounding Aegean islands sit at the same latitude with a fraction of the light. The Canary Islands are the strongest option in Europe: at Tenerife's latitude the core reaches 33 degrees, above the inversion layer, and the observatory-grade skies are the reason so much professional astrophotography comes from there.

The other move is to change hemisphere. September is spring below the equator, and from there the core passes close to overhead rather than skulking near the horizon. From Cape Town it climbs to nearly 79 degrees, almost straight up. Patagonia gets it to 65 degrees over some of the least light-polluted landscape on the planet, and September there is shoulder season with fewer people and unstable, photogenic weather.

Autumn colour in September: much further north than you think

September is not autumn-colour month in most of the places people book for autumn colour. It is autumn-colour month in a fairly narrow band, and going to the wrong one is the most common September mistake.

It is happening now in Lapland. Finnish autumn has its own name, ruska, and it peaks in northern Lapland around the second week of September, reaching Kuusamo and Rovaniemi about 15 to 20 September. The change is triggered by the first hard frosts and moves south at roughly 100 kilometres a week, so a warm start delays it and an early cold snap can strip it fast. The pay-off is that ruska and the return of dark nights overlap almost exactly, so mid-to-late September in Finnish Lapland is the one place where autumn colour and the aurora genuinely are the same trip.

It is not happening yet almost anywhere else. The larches in the Dolomites and the Alps turn in October, not September, and going three weeks early gets you green valleys and closed refuges. Kyoto's maples are a late November event and no amount of optimism moves them. New England's north woods start turning in the last week of September and peak in October. If your dates are locked to September and you want colour, the answer is north, not up a mountain.

Cities in September: the light arrives at a civilised hour

There is a widely repeated claim that autumn gives you longer golden hours. At mid-latitudes in September it is simply not true. Golden hour, the period when the Sun sits between 6 degrees and the horizon, lasts about 44 minutes in London in September against 54 minutes around the June solstice. It is shorter, not longer. It gets longer later in the year as the Sun's path flattens, but not yet.

What September actually gives you is timing. London's sunset moves from 19:47 on 1 September to 18:41 on 30 September, against roughly 21:20 in late June. Nearly two hours of daylight disappear across the month. That means you can shoot a full sunset and blue hour in Rome or Lisbon and still sit down to dinner at a normal time, and a sunrise shoot no longer means a 04:00 alarm. Combined with lower crowds and softer, hazier air after the summer heat, this is the strongest month of the year for European city work. Two hard dates worth knowing. Oktoberfest runs 19 September to 4 October 2026 in Munich, the 191st edition, which is either a reason to go or a reason to avoid Bavarian accommodation prices depending on your project. And the equinox on 23 September is the one day of the year the Sun rises very close to due east and sets very close to due west everywhere on Earth, which is quietly useful if you have been waiting to line a sunset up with a street that runs east to west.
