Travel Photography Apps in 2026: What Still Works With No Signal

Every photography app you take abroad falls into one of two groups, and one question sorts them: is the thing you want to know arithmetic, or is it a fact about the world right now? Sunset in Kyoto on 1 October, the phase of the moon, the predicted height of the tide at dawn are all arithmetic, and a phone can work them out in aeroplane mode, years ahead, with no signal at all. Cloud cover tonight, the aurora, whether the coast road is shut, whether the gate is locked: none of that exists until it happens, so no download can contain it. Sort your apps by that one line and you will pack the right ones, and stop being caught out at the moment your bars disappear.

Why some apps work in a cave and others never will

The sun's position is not looked up. It is calculated, from equations that have been stable for centuries. Give a phone your latitude, your longitude and a date and it can produce sunrise, sunset, the golden hour, the moon's phase and the angle of the Milky Way without asking anything of the internet. That is why a good sun app keeps working at the bottom of a valley in the Dolomites with no bars showing.

The aurora is the opposite case, and it is worth understanding why, because no amount of pre-planning fixes it. NOAA's aurora product is a 30 to 90 minute forecast. It is that short because the solar wind driving the display is measured by a satellite sitting at the L1 point, roughly 1.5 million km sunward of Earth, which buys only 15 to 60 minutes of warning before that wind arrives. Nobody can hand you next Tuesday's aurora, online or off. The data does not exist yet.

Weather sits in the same bucket. So do opening hours, road closures, crowds and live transport. Anything whose honest answer begins with "right now" or "forecast" needs a connection, permanently, by nature.

What your phone can work out with the radio off

Three things a photographer actually cares about are pure computation, and all three survive a dead signal.

Sun and moon. Every planning app worth installing runs its own ephemeris, which is just a table of celestial positions generated from equations. PhotoPills states plainly that it works offline, with the sun and moon sections computing locally. Sun Surveyor says the same for its ephemeris and 3D compass, and is specific about the exceptions: Map View and Street View are the parts that need data. That exception is the tell. The maths is local; the pictures of the world are not.

Tides. Tide prediction is also arithmetic, which surprises people. A tide table is built by harmonic analysis: the curve at a given port is modelled as a sum of periodic terms, and NOAA notes that 37 constituents normally carry most of the effect. Once an app holds the constants for a port, it can compute that port's tides on the device forever. For anyone shooting coastline, that means low water at dawn is knowable before you leave home.

Here is the proof. I computed the table below with the NOAA solar equations on a machine with no network access to any almanac, which is exactly the point: your phone does the same sum. Times are local clock time for 1 October 2026.

Two things in that table are worth more than the times themselves. First, Edinburgh's golden hour is roughly half as long again as Kyoto's, 50 minutes against 34, on the same date. The sun sets at a shallower angle the further you are from the equator, so it takes longer to cross the band of sky that produces warm light. That is a latitude effect, and it is why the same shot needs different discipline in different cities. If you want the mechanics rather than the numbers, the golden hour guide covers them properly.

Second, a caveat I would rather give you than hide. My computed New York sunset is 18:38; published tables give 18:40. The two-minute gap is the reference coordinates, not the maths, and it matters practically: a city is not a point. Your app computing from your actual GPS position will beat any city-level table, including this one. And note that the astronomy is fixed while the clock label is a political choice, so a time computed years ahead assumes today's daylight-saving rules still hold.

The map is the thing that actually breaks

Most people who plan for a signal blackout download an offline map, feel prepared, and then discover the one limitation that matters most to a photographer. Google's own documentation is blunt about it: "When you're offline, transit, bicycling, or walking directions are unavailable."

Offline Google Maps is a driving product. You will have turn-by-turn in the car and nothing on foot, which is precisely backwards for a city break, where you walk everywhere and the driving you do is from the airport. You also lose satellite view, Street View and 3D, and those three are the scouting tools. Checking which side of a bridge catches the light is a satellite-view job, and satellite view is the first thing to go.

Two more traps worth knowing. Downloaded areas expire; Maps tries to refresh an area automatically over Wi-Fi once it has 15 days or less left, which is fine at home and useless if you have been travelling on mobile data for a fortnight. And some countries cannot be downloaded at all, for contractual, language and address-format reasons. Find that out in your kitchen, not in the arrivals hall.

Do this: download a box noticeably larger than you think you need, because guidance stops dead at the boundary. Then screenshot your shortlist of spots with their pins visible, because a screenshot is the one format that cannot fail to load. Editing works offline, until it doesn't

Editing is the easy category, with one sharp edge.

Snapseed does its work on the device. No account, no connection, no cost, and a full set of tools including selective adjustments. On a flight home with a phone full of raw material, it is the whole workflow.

Lightroom mobile is the sharp edge. You can edit offline, but only files that are actually on the phone, either the original or a smart preview. Photos you shot that morning are local, so they edit fine. A cloud album from last year is not, unless you marked it for offline availability before you lost signal, and that download takes time and space. Your edits then sync when you reconnect. The failure mode is entirely predictable and entirely avoidable: people assume the cloud library is on the phone, and it is not.

If you only have your phone: shoot in the highest quality your camera app offers, do nothing on the trip, and edit in Snapseed on the way home. Batch editing at the end of a day beats fiddling in the field, where you are looking at a bright screen in the dark and wrecking your night vision. The hiking row hides the single most common mistake. PhotoPills and Sun Surveyor both compute happily offline, but the map inside them is downloaded tiles like any other map. PhotoPills' own advice is to pan and zoom around the areas you care about while you still have a connection, so the tiles are cached before you go. Do that on hotel Wi-Fi for anywhere you plan to stand, whether that is the Dolomites, the Scottish Highlands or the interior of Iceland, where the gap between towns is long enough to matter. The night-before checklist

Twenty minutes on hotel Wi-Fi buys a day that does not fall apart.

  1. Download the offline map box, larger than the area you plan to cover.
  2. Open your sun or moon app and pan the map around every location on tomorrow's list, so the tiles cache.
  3. Write down, on the phone's notes app or on paper, tomorrow's sunrise, golden hour and sunset. Belt and braces, and it costs nothing.
  4. Screenshot your shortlist with the pins visible.
  5. Check the forecast now and accept it will change. Pick a wet-weather alternative for each spot.
  6. Mark any cloud photos you want to edit as available offline.
  7. Charge everything, and pack the battery pack you keep forgetting.

None of that is clever. All of it is the difference between standing in the right place at 18:15 and standing in the wrong place looking at a spinning loader.

Do photography apps work without an internet connection?

It depends on what the app calculates. Sun, moon, tide and Milky Way apps compute their answers from equations on the device, so they work with no signal at all. PhotoPills and Sun Surveyor both state that their core ephemeris functions work offline. Anything that reports weather, aurora activity, live crowds or opening hours needs a connection, because that information does not exist until it happens.

Does PhotoPills work offline?

Yes. PhotoPills computes sun, moon, Milky Way and twilight information locally, so those functions work with no connection. The exception is the map inside the Planner, which uses downloaded tiles like any other map. Can you get walking directions on Google Maps offline?

No. Google's documentation states that transit, bicycling and walking directions are unavailable offline. Downloaded maps support driving navigation only. For a city break, where you walk almost everywhere, this is the most important limitation to plan around. The practical workaround is to screenshot your route and your saved pins, since a screenshot cannot fail to load.

How long do offline Google Maps last before they expire?

Downloaded areas expire rather than lasting indefinitely. When an area has 15 days or less remaining and the phone is on Wi-Fi, Google Maps attempts to update it automatically. If you have been travelling on mobile data for a couple of weeks, that automatic refresh may not have happened, so it is worth checking your downloads before a trip rather than assuming they are current.

Why can't aurora forecasts tell me about next week?

Because the driving data does not exist yet.
