Where to Shoot in August 2026: A Total Eclipse and the Perseids on the Same Day

Put 12 August in your diary now. On that single day a total solar eclipse crosses eastern Greenland, the west coast of Iceland and northern Spain — and that same night the Perseid meteor shower peaks under a new moon, with zero moonlight to wash it out. One date, two of the best things a camera can point at. If you're in the UK or Ireland you don't get totality, but you do get a deep partial eclipse of roughly 90% at sunset. Here's where to be, what time, and how to shoot both without ruining your eyes or your sensor.

We're three weeks out, which is exactly the window where this is still actionable — flights and beds inside the path of totality are going fast, and the difference between a good spot and a great one is mostly decided now, not on the day. What follows is the plan: the eclipse first, the Perseids second, then the rest of what's genuinely at its peak this month.

12 August 2026: a total solar eclipse over Iceland and Spain

This is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, and the path is narrow. The Moon's shadow crosses Arctic Russia and eastern Greenland, clips the west coast of Iceland, then races south-east across the Atlantic to make landfall in northern Spain about 35 minutes later, ending with a sliver of Portugal.

The maximum duration of totality is 2 minutes 18 seconds, and annoyingly it falls in the ocean about 45km west of Látrabjarg, Iceland. On land you're choosing between two very different propositions: Iceland gets a longer totality with the Sun comfortably high, while Spain gets a shorter one with the Sun almost on the horizon — which is either a problem or the whole picture, depending on how you shoot.

One rule above all others: check your exact spot against a proper path map before you book anything. Twenty kilometres off the centreline costs you a meaningful chunk of an event that lasts barely a hundred seconds. If you're flying into a big hub, confirm the ground you'll actually stand on is inside the path — don't assume the nearest city is.

Iceland: the longer totality, and the better Sun angle

Iceland's totality is a mid-afternoon event — the partial phase begins in Reykjavík at around 16:47 local time, with totality about an hour later near 17:48, roughly four hours before a 21:57 sunset. That high Sun is the practical advantage: you're not fighting for a clear horizon, so you can build a composition around a foreground you actually like — a cliff, a church, a stack of basalt — rather than taking whatever gap in the hills you can find.

The trade-off is Icelandic weather, which does what it wants. Have two or three viable spots within driving distance and be prepared to move on the morning forecast. The west coast, around the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Westfjords, sits closest to the centreline. Northern Spain: a shorter totality, a lower Sun, and better odds of clear sky

Spain's totality lands around 20:27–20:35 local time with the Sun between roughly 2° and 8° above the horizon depending where you stand (about 8° at Burgos, 6° at Zaragoza) — an hour or so before sunset. That is genuinely hard to shoot and genuinely spectacular: an eclipsed Sun sitting just above a landscape, with the corona against a twilight sky rather than a black one. You will need an unobstructed view to the west-north-west. Not "mostly clear". Unobstructed.

The longest mainland totality runs near the centreline through Asturias and on through León, Burgos and Palencia. Duration falls steadily from west to east, so the mainland maximum sits on the western Asturian coast; Oviedo gets about 1m 49s, the longest of any Spanish provincial capital, and León and Burgos around 1m 45s. we have full photography guides for León, Burgos and Zaragoza covering the spots, the light and the eclipse specifics for each. But the northern coast carries real cloud risk in August — and it is worse than "some risk". Cloud along the Bay of Biscay runs close to 60%, and satellite records suggest the eclipse would have been easily visible on only 10 of the last 21 August 12ths there, and not at all on 9 of them. Asturias offers the best duration on the mainland and the worst odds of seeing it. Inland and eastern Spain have the better weather odds: Zaragoza is the pick most experienced eclipse chasers land on, trading a shorter totality of about 1m 25s for the highest clear-sky probability on the mainland and easy transport — the Ebro valley records the lowest August cloud cover anywhere on the Spanish path. Mallorca has roughly 75% odds of clear sky — good, though not demonstrably better than inland sites like Zaragoza — and its real advantage is a sea horizon, because it puts the Sun at only about 2–2.5°. There, it is open water or nothing.

How to photograph an eclipse without damaging your eyes or your camera

This section is not optional, and it is the one place in this newsletter where I'm going to be blunt rather than helpful-sounding. Never point a camera at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun without a certified solar filter over the front of the lens. Lens optics concentrate sunlight; you can destroy a sensor in seconds and your eyesight faster than that if you're using an optical viewfinder.

For the partial phases, a fixed aperture around f/8–f/16 and shutter speeds somewhere between 1/1000s and 1/4s will get you there; test in advance on the ordinary Sun with the filter fitted so you're not guessing on the day.

During totality — and only during totality — the filter comes off. The corona is around a million times fainter than the Sun's surface, so it's invisible through a solar filter. Pick one aperture and bracket shutter speeds across a wide range, roughly 1/1000s to 1 second, because the corona's brightness falls off steeply from the edge outwards and no single exposure captures all of it. Then put the filter back on the instant totality ends. The returning sliver of Sun is as dangerous as the full one.

If you only have your phone: hold a spare pair of eclipse glasses flat over the camera lens during the partial phases — it's a cheap, effective filter. During totality, take the glasses away, brace the phone on a wall or a small tripod, and turn night mode off so it doesn't smear a two-minute event into mush. Honestly though, the best advice for a phone-only shooter is to take three or four frames and then put it down and watch. Totality lasts under two minutes and it is not an experience you want to spend squinting at a screen.

What you'll see from the UK and Ireland

No totality, but a deep partial eclipse at low Sun, which is its own kind of photograph. Per the Royal Observatory Greenwich, London sees about 90% of the Sun covered, Cornwall roughly 95%, and south-west Ireland almost 97.5%. From London the Moon starts crossing the Sun at about 18:17 BST, maximum falls near 19:12, and it's over by 20:06. Times shift by a few minutes across the country, running slightly earlier in Scotland.

Because the whole thing happens as the Sun is dropping, an open west-north-west horizon matters as much here as it does in Spain. A coastline facing the right way, a hill, or a high rooftop beats a park with trees on the wrong side. City readers: a crescent Sun setting behind a recognisable skyline is a better photograph than a crescent Sun on its own, so scout an alignment — London and Edinburgh both have plenty of elevated westward views if you plan a day or two ahead. The same filter rules apply: 90% covered is still 10% of the Sun, which is more than enough to hurt you.

The same night: the Perseids peak with no Moon at all

The Perseids peak around 13 August, and 2026 is the good year — new moon falls on 12 August, so the sky is genuinely dark through the entire peak window instead of being bleached by moonlight. Under properly dark skies you can expect up to 100 meteors an hour, with rates climbing through the night and best between roughly 2am and 6am. The mornings of 12 and 13 August are your two shots.

We flagged this as a look-ahead in last month's briefing; now it's three weeks out and worth planning properly. The technique is simple and unglamorous: a wide lens, the widest aperture you have, ISO somewhere around 1600–3200, and 15–25 second exposures fired continuously for hours. You are not "catching" a meteor — you're running the camera long enough that one lands in the frame. Compose with a foreground worth looking at, because a frame of pure sky with a scratch across it is a diagram, not a photograph.

Get away from town: light pollution costs you more meteors than any camera setting will win back. Let your eyes adapt for twenty minutes and don't check your phone. If you're already in Iceland or Spain for the eclipse, you're well placed for the same night — and if you're staying home, a dark hillside an hour from a city will do the job.

Also at its peak in August

Beyond the 12th, three things are worth building a trip around this month.

Heather in Scotland. The moors turn purple through August and hold into September — the Cairngorms, the Isle of Skye, and quieter spots like Lochindorb and Dava Moor. It photographs best in flat, soft light rather than hard sun, which makes Scotland's default weather an asset for once. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 7–31 August. This year's programme runs to 3,649 shows across 258 venues, which in practical terms means the Royal Mile becomes the densest street-photography environment in Britain for three weeks. Go early in the run or early in the day if you want room to work; the middle two weeks are the busiest. Performers in costume generally welcome being photographed — ask anyway. Iceland's aurora season restarting. Early August still has too much daylight, but nights darken quickly through the month, and by the last week the first faint auroras start appearing on clear nights. On 12 August the Sun sets at 21:57 with genuine darkness from around 23:00 to 03:00 — enough for the Milky Way, and an outside chance of something greener late in the month.
